A path of several generations celebrating the true Passion for Garnacha.
The first writings on oenology in our region were found in the Monastery of Veruela and date back to 1203.
The wine culture continued to expand in the area and hundreds of years later, in the 19th century, private wineries began to be established around Veruela.
In the 1950s, economic difficulties led small groups of farmers to join together to found cooperatives, which today make up the majority of our D.O.
In 1958 the Borja Cooperative was founded. Thus the original Borsao brand was born. For several decades, the company worked mainly with bulk products.
At this time, Garnacha was a grape that was practically despised throughout the world and many farmers even decided to eliminate their vineyards. However, in the area the Passion for Garnacha arose and people decided to bet on our variety.
The growing quality of our wines meant that in 1981 the first bottles were marketed and the first exports arrived ten years later.
In 2001, the cooperatives of Pozuelo de Aragón and Tabuenca joined the project, contributing their know-how and their vineyards.
It is then when the partners and the management team promoted the foundation of the new winery: setting the guidelines for the care of the vineyards and the harvest to continue with a renovation of the facilities.
For more than two decades, the quality and recognition of Bodegas Borsao wines has increased exponentially around the world, positioning itself as a world reference in Garnacha and one of the most awarded wineries in Spain.
In 2019, the construction of the new winery was completed, which represents an unprecedented boost for the brand, providing facilities designed to respond to global demand, maximize quality and ensure the sustainability of our processes.
Denomination of Origin Campo de Borja
Established in 1980, the Campo de Borja D.O. has a wine-growing heritage of exceptional Garnacha grapes. Of its 7,500 hectares, 5,000 are of this variety, highly appreciated enologically for the structural and chromatic complexity it provides to the wines. On average, 60% of the vineyards are between 30 and 50 years old.
The characteristic microclimates and soils of the area enrich the nuances of our vineyards and allow us to call Campo de Borja 'The Empire of Garnacha'. Each year in the D.O. between 20 and 25 million kilos of grapes are obtained. Bodegas Borsao represents 36% of the surface of the appellation.
